How a Clay Mask / Skin Care Mask Works

Masks (masques) have been used for skin clarification for thousands of years. Essentially, you apply a layer of something "sticky" to your face, this can be clay, gel, or other concoctions. Because the gel or clay is sticky and is mostly liquid goo, it squishes into the nooks, crannies and pores of your face, connecting with all the dirt and and oils hiding in there. As the goo dries, it pulls away from your skin, and it draws all of those impurities and dead skin cells with it. Kinda like if you take tape and pressed it against clothing with lint on it - when you lift the tape, all the lint sticks to the tape and lifts away with it.

Then when you wash off the dried goo, you also wash away all the oil, dirt, grime, etc that was buried deep in your pores. You also wash away the dried, dead skin. This leaves you with fresh, clean, non-oily skin. And masks tend to have a good amount of water in them so as they dry, your skin is being moisturised and hydrated - which is a good thing. Your pores, now clean of gunk, can contract and be nice and small, giving your face a smoother look and feel. Your blood vessels tend to open up a bit with the warming that goes along with this process, which means they do a much better job of bringing nutrients to the surface of your skin and flushing out waste products, or toxins and impurities.

So in general a face mask is VERY good for your skin - not just from a beauty standpoint (fewer acne problems, cleaner pores, smaller pores) but also from a health standpoint. Your skin is literally how your body keeps infections and virusses from entering your body, so the healthier your skin, the healthier the you!
